Why Choose Us?

  • We offer a true holistic approach to recovery. The idea behind a holistic approach is not solely treating symptoms or specific issues, but rather understanding the underlying causes and promoting overall balance and harmony. Our goal is to incorporate a combination of conventional therapies including physical exercises as well as meditation, mindfulness, and other alternative modalities including:

    • Tai chi classes with Brent Neely

    • Yoga with Jamie Knox has been a staple since we opened in 2016

    • We opened a mini gym in our Foundation house and even have a licensed Physical Trainer Ben Struble who will lead personal training groups at his private gym every Saturday morning. In addition to this, all clients are given membership to either the YMCA or WNC Barbell.

    • Life Skills workshop with George Mattfeld

  • Having a family recovery specialist on our team is a unique offering in the Asheville area sober living community. Robin Miller’s focus is to work with our families in their understanding of the healthiest and best ways they can support their loved one’s recovery. Her primary goal, however, is to guide family members in their own recovery journey by providing education and practical instruction on effective communication, the setting and holding of healthy boundaries, addressing enabling behaviors, rebuilding trust in relationships, and offering emotional and empathetic support. She provides a vital support service that directly benefits our clients. Our experience in the years that Robin Miller has worked with our families has proven that her approach and involvement is effective and productive in enhancing growth and better outcomes for our clients.

Addiction is a disease that does great harm to relationships. Robin’s ability to provide and support a framework for a family’s recovery simultaneously with the work we do with our clients can aid in restoring balance to the family system and healing the family unit.

  • The Founders of Peace and Purpose were brought up in recovery with the core belief of consistency of purpose and service work. Before Peace and Purpose was founded we played an important role in the Recovery Community in Asheville where we were part of bringing the first Cocaine Anonymous Group to Asheville over a decade ago. We also helped start an AA group “The Original Way” where the focus was how the founding fathers of 12- step facilitation worked with Alcoholics and Addicts. Such roots can only be achieved by time and a passion for self-growth through the desire to help others.

  • Sober Living is a service, and as such, our service to the community is only as professional as the people providing that service, and that is why we have set standards for our team. All our staff are trained professionals who, unlike any other sober living, must have at least two years of lived recovery. We encourage clients interested in working in recovery to pursue their goals; it's our responsibility as mentors. Many of our clients, past and present, have started this process by becoming a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor-Registrant (CADCR), which is a good start toward that goal.

  • In addition to our therapeutic modalities, we have a fully functioning woodshop where clients can explore their creative/inventive side, which can play a vital role in recovery. Over the years we have made all sorts of furniture, emphasizing repurposing old into new, from barnwood cabinets with washboard doors to benches and seats crafted from milk churns and tractor seats.

It is important to note that while creative modalities can be highly beneficial in the recovery process, they are not a substitute they are not a substitute for professional treatment or therapy. Peace and Purpose have longstanding relationships with numerous therapists in the Asheville community, so all our clients get to pick what kind of therapy best suits their needs.

  • Steps to Peace and Purpose is one of the very few sober living homes in Asheville that is certified by the North Carolina Association Of Recovery Residences (NCARR) We are an NCARR level 3 certified provider. Just as we encourage our clients to be responsible, we decided early on we would hold ourselves to that same level of accountability. We earned certification in 2016 and have been affiliate members of the National Association of Recovery Residences ever since.

  • At Steps to Peace and Purpose, we emphasize fun in recovery. Recovery can be challenging and intense, and group activities allow individuals to have fun and enjoy themselves in a sober and supportive environment. We know we can help guys find joy and fulfillment in their recovery journey. We don't just do the “Occasional Outing” once a month; we want this to be a memorable experience, so we do weekly outings where we challenge ourselves by engaging in activities some of us only ever dreamed of doing!

We are regulars at Wahoo Zip-lining in Sevier Tennessee, or White-water rafting on the Ocoee River is another favorite. Rain or shine, we're on the track Go-Karting in Greenville SC or Paintballing at Wolverine Arden NC. We are snowboarding and snow tubing when winter comes and when it goes, early spring on one of the many lakes, we have a fleet of canoes and kayaks at the house. We like to keep up with our many adventures, so we post our activities on Instagram and Facebook. We are not a glum lot, check out our activity photos!

  • Our program consists of three phases plus a step-down home.

Steps to Peace and Purpose uses a 3-phase program:

Phase 1: When a client arrives from in-patient treatment and begins to settle in, we help him get a sponsor, and he will start step work, attend daily meetings, do volunteer work four mornings a week, and participate in daily house activities.

Phase 2: This is when a client can begin employment or schooling, use his vehicle, and can come and go more freely with a curfew. Typically, clients transition from phase 1 to phase 2 between 3 to 4 weeks.

Phase 3: Having completed the 12 steps, clients are ready to take other men through the steps. A client in phase 3 has typically learned to incorporate the 12 measures into his life and sponsors other men: “We learn more by teaching.”

Freedom House (Saoirse) was set up as part of our program for clients who have completed the steps and are starting to plan for independent living. It is a Step-Down Home where they can live until we have found a suitable sober roommate situation.

  • In keeping with our holistic approach, Ben Struble, CPT has joined our team as a Certified Trainer. Ben’s mission is to help our clients take pride and ownership over their bodies and fitness and to develop the discipline and effort required to achieve their physical goals.

  • You’ll find frequent canine visitors at our houses and we welcome your service/emotional support dog.
